Speech Therapy Services Offered

Speech & Language Evaluations

If you, your child's pediatrician or teacher feel that your child would benefit from help with their communication, we start with an evaluation to see what skills could use some support. This is a time to look at your child's communication and discuss the priorities for your child. The evaluation includes a child observation and a standardized assessment to get an idea of where your child's skills are. A parent interview is also used to get an understanding of what you find important for your child and family. Evaluations typically take place in my home office to give us time and space to discuss your concerns.

Speech & Language Therapy Sessions

After meeting to assess your child, speech therapy sessions can begin. I tend to use a play-based model to meet the child where they are. Some children benefit from a more structured approach so we can adjust as is appropriate for a child's needs. Most sessions are 30 minutes and can be done at your child's school or daycare with permission. Notes will be shared with the family after every session that include our activities and skills addressed to help with carryover. Progress is always monitored to make the necessary adjustments as the needs arise.

Speech & Language Consultation

Speech and language consultation can also be provided for you or your child's team. Sometimes, collaborative consultation and/or coaching can provide effective results as a supplement or alternative to direct therapy. I have worked as a teacher in schools and understand the balance of classroom management and addressing individual differences within a group. I can provide thoughtful support to an educational team.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What's the procedure for starting therapy?

    • Free Consult- Typically, we start our treatment with a 15 minute consult to talk about your child and decide on a plan
    • Assessment- Next, a speech & language assessment is completed to help determine your child’s strengths and opportunities for growth. Normally, this is a combination of standardized measures as well as a parent interview and input from teachers. Information from the assessment is used to create goals for your child. The testing part of the assessment is completed in my home office to provide a quiet environment and an appropriate amount of time.
    • Speech & Language Therapy- After completing the assessment and developing goals, therapy visits begin. Therapy is often done at the child’s school or childcare if appropriate. When a session occurs at a school or childcare, a short written communication will be shared with the family.
    • Progress monitoring- At a minimum, a child’s progress will be assessed annually but more often as is appropriate.

  • Why private pay?

Danielle Watson Speech Therapy provides private pay services. Private pay services offer greater flexibility as they are not tied to insurance reimbursement stipulations such as specific assessments and diagnostic requirements. This allows families, along with their therapy provider, more control in determining priorities for treatment. There is also no requirement for a referral or prescription from your child’s doctor, which can delay the initiation of services.  A super bill will be provided each month if families would like to submit to their insurance on their own.

Assessments are typically completed at the DWST home office.

Therapy services are generally done at your child's school or childcare centers. During summer breaks, therapy can be done at the DWST home office.

  • What does a speech therapy session look like?

Speech therapy sessions can look very different depending on the child's interests and age.

Typically, there is play! I like to follow a child's lead to make the activity more meaningful.  Sometimes I will join a child in class to support if appropriate.

Of course, there are times that more structured activities or games are appropriate to encourage more language or articulation repetition practice.

After the session, a note will be shared with the family will know the skills addressed and activities done during the session.
